21st Annual Turkey Chase on November 21st

The 21st annual Turkey Chase 7K is history. It was held under good weather on Saturday,
November 21. There were 197 registered runners with 179 completing the course. There were also 14 Walkers, 10 Kiddie Run participants, and 26 Fun Run participants.
23 year old Sean Kennedy of Connersville was the winner of the race. He ran it in 23:19.
The overall female runner was 31 year old Kristina Tabor of New Castle. Her time was 27:57.
This was Executive Director Cynthia Warren's first race, having taken over from Pat Bowers earlier
this year. Warren said, "I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone
who volunteered their time to help with the Turkey Chase. This event ran smoothly and efficiently. I appreciate
your hard work and dedication to Easter Seals Wayne and Union Counties."

Pat Bowers, who served as race director for the past 20 years, had never run the 7K.
But, she had her chance this year. She was only runner entered in the 65 to 69 age group. She was 160th with a
time of 48:39.
Easter Seals will also sponsor the Frostbite 5K at Glen Miller Park in Richmond on December
5.
Both races are major fund raisers for the organization.

The Easter Seals Turkey Chase Race Committee and the Premier Sponsor, Precision Wire
Assemblies, Inc. had a great time looking over the Turkey Drawing Contest entries! We are
proud to announce the winner of the Turkey Drawing Contest. Congratulations to Rick Moore,
long time resident of Richmond, Indiana, who now resides in Leesburg, Florida! Rick’s
drawing will be printed on the back of the Turkey Chase 7K shirts and he will receive a souvenir
shirt with his design and a gift certificate for a turkey.
On behalf of the race committee, thank you to everyone who submitted an entry for the
Easter Seals Turkey Drawing Contest. Because of your interest we are able to give our race shirts a fresh look.
This year’s Turkey Chase 7K road race was held on Saturday, November 21st at
Centerville High School. There also was a Kiddie Run, One-Mile Fun Run and Historic Walk.
All net proceeds from the event will be used to support Easter Seals Wayne &
Union Counties local programs, such as camping for persons with disabilities, education, and loaning of
convalescent equipment, as well as new programs, which will meet the growing needs of local families caring for a loved one
with a disability. Together, we can create solutions and change lives in our local community.
50% of Easter Seals program funding comes from supporters like you. The other half is provided by
United Way.

Easter Seals in need of wide wheel chairs
Easter Seals Wayne & Union Counties is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to assist persons
with disabilities reach the maximum of their capabilities and achieve as much independence as possible. Our staff and
volunteers work to achieve our mission through Easter Seals programs and services.
One of our programs is a Medical Equipment & Supplies loan program. Currently we are in need of
wheel chairs. We have had many requests for the extra wide and xx-wide wheel chairs over the past few months.
Due to the number of requests, we are out of the extra wide and xx-wide wheel chairs at this time. We do have some regular
and child wheel chairs, however the stock is dwindling as we are receiving requests of those in need.
We welcome and greatly appreciate donations of gently used wheel chairs of any size, but especially the extra
wide and xx-wide wheel chairs. Donations are accepted Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you would
like to come by with your donation on a Friday or Saturday, please call ahead. The Easter Seals office is located at
1050 E Main Street, Centerville.

Intern receives Easter Seals scholarship

2009 Centerville High School graduate Taylor Felker received the $500 scholarship from Easter Seals this
year. Taylor plans to attend Ball State University this fall and study physical therapy. Board treasurer Leslie
Whitney presented the award during the Senior Honors Program at Centerville High School on May 30.
Taylor, the daughter of Mark and Kellie Felker and granddaughter of board member Bill Felker, served as the
organization's intern this past year.

Pat Bowers honored with Community Award

Recently retired executive director Pat Bowers has been honored with a Centerville Lions Club Community Award.
Awards committee member Phil Stevenson presented the award at the club's 24th Annual Community Awards Banquet Monday evening,
April 13 at Centerville High School.
Pat and her family moved to Wayne County in 1968 and became executive director of Easter Seals in 1975.
She retired on March 31.
Pat has organized several activities while at Easter Seals including fund raisers 7K Turkey Chase and
5K Frostbite runs, State Fair Day, Fair Pizza Booth, Activity Day and Disability Awareness Program in local schools.
She has also been active in her church and Kuhlman Center.

Easter Seals receives grant from REMC Community Trust

Easter Seals received $1,000 to partial fund their disability awareness education program in
school systems in Wayne and Union counties thanks to the members of Whitewater Valley REMC. Whitewater Valley REMC Community
Trust Board Members Dee Harding, Kevin Smith and J.B. Cain, and Mary Jo Thomas, Director of Administrative Services and Corporate
Development for Whitewater Valley REMC presented the check to Cynthia L. Warren, Executive Director.
“Our program utilizes many resources as it helps non-disabled 1st and 4th grade students
get a ‘hands-on’ feel for what life is like for a person with a disability at school and in the community”,
said Cynthia Warren, Executive Director.
The trustees meet quarterly on the fourth Monday
of January, April, July, and October to review applications for grants. Applications and information regarding the program

Pizza Booth draws fair goers

One of the favorite food vendors for 4-H fair goers is the Easter Seals
Pizza Booth. Again this year, the booth featured Papa Johns pepperoni, sausage and cheese pizzas. Volunteers also
sold bread sticks, Coke products, water and carmel apples. It is one of the major fund raisers for the organization
which provides services for people with disabilities.

Activity day on May 9 had a race car theme this year. Two local drivers brought their race cars
to to the Kulhman Center. Many kids had fun sitting in the cars and having their pictures taken with the drivers.
42 kids met their friends at the annual get-to-gether and had a very special time. Board members and
others volunteer their time to make this day possible each year.

Board honors retiring executive director

Pat Bowers was honored by the Easter Seals board with a dinner and presentations at the Old Richmond Inn
on April 28. She was presented a picture "Midmorning" by artist Nancy Noel. It pictures an Amish boy with his
calf. She also received several fun gifts, presented in skit form by board members Kathie Baumer and Debbie Weiss.
Board past president Bill Felker told those gathered that Pat came to Wayne County in July of 1968.
And became executive director in 1975 in what would become 34 years in that position. In the early years her home was
the office and the basement was the storage area. Easter Seals would find its present home shortly after Pat and her
family moved to the country in 1980.
Besides Easter Seals, Pat has served the community on the Kuhlman Center board and chaired the Worship Committee
at Centerville United Methodist Church.
While at Easter Seals, she organized Fair Day, Fair Booth, Activity Day for children, the therapeutic tricycle
program and the Disability Awareness Programs in the county schools.

Events bring in needed funds

Walks at area schools this spring have brought in needed funds for Easter Seals. The Kids Helping
Kids Walk-a-thons at Rose Hamilton, Centerville and Western Wayne elementary schools raised $3,680. The money is used
to send kids to camp from each of the schools. If money is left over, it is used for other kids who want to go to camp.
